I believe that the voices of fear, both from without and within, can only be dispelled by trusting the voice that comes from the heart. Be still and listen to it. If it speaks of love and compassion for others, for the world itself, it just might be the voice of God -- or a reasonable facsimile. If, however, it snarls with fear of the unknown, fear of losing what you have or of not getting what you want, then it just might be the voice of Rupert Murdoch -- or a reasonable facsimile.

TITLE: Who'll Stop the Rain
Long as I remember the rain been comin' down
Clouds of myst'ry pourin' confusion on the ground
Good men through the ages tryin' to find the sun
And I wonder, still I wonder who'll stop the rain
I went down Virginia seekin' shelter from the storm
Caught up in the fable I watched the tower grow
Five year plans and new deals wrapped in golden chains
And I wonder, still I wonder who'll stop the rain
Heard the singers playin', how we cheered for more
The crowd had rushed together tryin' to keep warm
Still the rain kept pourin', fallin' on my ears
And I wonder, still I wonder who'll stop the rain
Group leader John Fogerty wrote this. Like some of his other songs, like "Fortunate Son," it is a protest of the Vietnam War.
This was used in the 1978 motion picture of the same name starring Nick Nolte as a Vietnam veteran. The movie was going to be called Dog Soldiers, but when the producers got the rights to use this song, they changed the title to Who'll Stop The Rain. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for above 2)
The line, "I went down Virginia, seekin' shelter from the storm" gave Bob Dylan the idea for the title of his 1975 song "Shelter From The Storm."
When interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine, John Fogerty was asked, "Does 'Who'll Stop The Rain' contain lyrically specific meanings besides the symbolic dimension?" His response: "Certainly, I was talking about Washington when I wrote the song, but I remember bringing the master version of the song home and playing it. My son Josh was four years old at the time, and after he heard it, he said, 'Daddy stop the rain.' And my wife and I looked at each other and said, 'Well, not quite.'" (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for above 3)
Bruce Springsteen opened with this song during his summer stadium tour of 2003 whenever it was raining. (thanks, Brandon - New York, NY)

It is a beautiful song, with a very political meaning.
Basically what John Fogerty is singing is that he is sick with all the empty promises that politicians use. 5 year plans and New Deals were terms that previous presidents have used. And when he is singing about the singers playing and the crowd rushing up to them, despite the rain, its symbolism for people of the politicians party. Democrats and Republicans both will support their candidate no matter what, even under all the plans "wrapped in chains of gold". And Mr. Fogerty is just standing in the corner, listening to all the empty promises, wondering who is going to stop all the bullshit in the political system. It's a rhetoric question, because its always been like this, and it always will be.

Bennetit is a Republican. This is about Viet Nam. Our war there went on for 15 years; yes, rain is a metaphor for the rain of bombs and terror poured onto those people; "Virginia" is a beach outside Saigon; five year plans, and new deals were empty promises and smoke screens politicians put up to promote the war and keep it going....we obviously didn't learn a damn thing from this tragedy. We don't know or care about our own hisory, much less that of those our government calls "enemies".
How Software Companies Die
Orson Scott Card
Windows Sources, March 1995, p. 208
The environment that nutures creative programmers kills management and marketing types - and vice versa. Programming is the Great Game. It consumes you, body and soul. When you're caught up in it, nothing else matters. When you emerge into daylight, you might well discover that you're a hundred pounds overweight, your underwear is older than the average first grader, and judging from the number of pizza boxes lying around, it must be spring already. But you don't care, because your program runs, and the code is fast and clever and tight. You won. You're aware that some people think you're a nerd. So what? They're not players. They've never jousted with Windows or gone hand to hand with DOS. To them C++ is a decent grade, almost a B - not a language. They barely exist. Like soldiers or artists, you don't care about the opinions of civilians. You're building something intricate and fine. They'll never understand it.
(...)
Out Of Control
Here's the problem that ends up killing company after company. All successful software companies had, as their dominant personality, a leader who nurtured programmers. But no company can keep such a leader forever. Either he cashes out, or he brings in management types who end up driving him out, or he changes and becomes a management type himself. One way or another, marketers get control. But...control of what? Instead of finding assembly lines of productive workers, they quickly discover that their product is produced by utterly unpredictable, uncooperative, disobedient, and worst of all, unattractive people who resist all attempts at management. Put them on a time clock, dress them in suits, and they become sullen and start sabotaging the product. Worst of all, you can sense that they are making fun of you with every word they say.

As I ponder'd in silence,
Returning upon my poems, considering, lingering long,
A Phantom arose before me with distrustful aspect,
Terrible in beauty, age, and power,
The genius of poets of old lands,
As to me directing like flame its eyes,
With finger pointing to many immortal songs,
And menacing voice, What singest thou? it said,
Know'st thou not there is but one theme for ever-enduring bards?
And that is the theme of War, the fortune of battles,
The making of perfect soldiers.
Be it so, then I answer'd,
I too haughty Shade also sing war, and a longer and greater one than any,
Waged in my book with varying fortune, with flight, advance
and retreat, victory deferr'd and wavering,
(Yet methinks certain, or as good as certain, at the last,) the
field the world,
For life and death, for the Body and for the eternal Soul,
Lo, I too am come, chanting the chant of battles,
I above all promote brave soldiers.
"Brand Hauser: Look, we've already kicked the shit out of this place. What are we supposed to do? Turn our backs on all the entrepreneur possibilities? Business is a uniquely human response to a moral or cosmic crisis. Whether it's a tsunami or a sustained aerial bombardment, there's the same urgent call for urban renewal. "
VF Daily: It takes place in the fictional Middle Eastern country of Turaqistan, where your character, a hit man, plans the assassination of an oil minister while overseeing a trade show as a cover. Were you worried that people might be offended by some of the scenes, like the trade show’s chorus girls with prosthetic legs?
I think the idea was to make it offensive. I think what’s happening is offensive. The types of vertical integration that are going on are obscene: these companies that are making money off the bombing of a place and the reconstruction. This is deeply troubling stuff. Strangely, many of the things we put in the movie are not even that absurd. Rumsfeld was hosting a ski tournament for soldiers who had lost a limb and he was also sitting on the board of a company that was making the prosthetic limbs. There’s nothing we could do in the movie that has a fraction of the real obscenities of the war profiteers and the mercenaries and these so-called free marketeers who basically set up a fast protectionist’s racket.

The first sign came about three weeks ago, when a large volume of water suddenly disappeared from a pond in Enshi, Hubei province, around 350 miles east of the epicentre of the May 12 quake in Sichuan, according to media reports.
Three days before the earthquake, thousands of toads roamed the streets of Mianzhu, a hard-hit city where at least 2,000 people have been reported killed.
Mianzhu residents feared the toads were a sign of an approaching natural disaster, but a local forestry bureau official said it was normal, the Huaxi Metropolitan newspaper reported on May 10, two days before the earthquake.
“It’s obviously an omen. Officials say that there were environmental factors behind it, but that just goes to show how ignorant they are,” said one blog posting. Another posting said: “These experts are rubbish.”
The day of the earthquake, zebras banged their heads against their enclosure door at the zoo in Wuhan, 600 miles east of the epicentre, according to a newspaper in the city. Five minutes before the quake hit, dozens of peacocks started screeching.
Zoo officials told the Wuhan newspaper that the behaviour was probably a sign that an earthquake would happen.
“If the seismological bureau were professional enough they could have predicted the earthquake 10 days earlier, when several thousand cubic meters of water disappeared within an hour in Hubei, but the bureau there dismissed it,” one commentator wrote on a Chinese internet chat site.
An article in Tuesday’s China Daily newspaper questioned why the government did not predict the earthquake.
Several countries, including China, have sought to use changes in nature – mostly animal behaviour – as an early warning sign. But so far, no reliable way has been found to use animals to predict earthquakes, said Roger Musson, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey.
Zhang Xiaodong, a researcher at the China Seismological Bureau, said his agency had used natural activity to predict earthquakes 20 times in the past 20 years, but that represents a small proportion of China’s earthquakes.
“The problem now is this kind of relationship is still quite vague,” he said.
In the winter of 1975, Chinese officials ordered the evacuation of the city of Haicheng in northeastern Liaoning province the day before a 7.3 magnitude earthquake, based on reports of unusual animal behavior and changes in ground water levels. Still, more than 2,000 people died.
A year later, China failed to warn of a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Tangshan in northeastern China that killed 240,000.
Strange environmental phenomena had been reported in the area before the quake, such as changes in the level of well water, Musson said.
A team of Chinese seismologists was sent but didn’t find any evidence to suggest an earthquake. As the seismologists were going home, they stopped for the night in Tangshan and were killed in the quake.
In the first fine flush of freedom after the Liberation, I had entertained hopes that it would change everything--that it would somehow do away with inequality and matriarchal dominance and those humorless women determined to eliminate the word "manhole" and third-person singular pronouns from the language.
Of course it didn't. Men still make more money, "herstory" is still a blight on the semantic landscape, and my mother can still say, "Oh, Traci!" in a tone that reduces me to pre-adolescence.
"Her decision!" Mother said. "Do you mean to tell me you plan to stand idly by and allow your daughter to make the mistake of her life?"
"What can I do? She's twenty-two years old and of sound mind."
"If she were of sound mind she wouldn't be doing this. Didn't you try to talk her out of it?"
"Of course I did, Mother."
"And?"
"And I didn't succeed. She's determined to become a Cyclist."
"My grandfather went to political prison, my uncle too. But there were a lot of families with this background. Of course, it depends on which social class you come from. If I came from a small town by the Afghanistan frontier, I would not be here [or] able to read and write. Probably at this age, I would have been dead."

Now she is famous, people frequently ask Satrapi to stand up and represent particular political standpoints. When they do, she says: "I tell them, 'Fuck you.'" Providing answers, she says, isn't her profession. "You want a quick answer? Ask a politician. I'm an artist – let me ask you the questions."
RT: Persepolis is France's official selection for the Oscars. What does that entail on your part? More prestige and more press to do?
MS: For me, it means more than that. Germany chose The Edge of Heaven which is as much a German as a Turkish movie. It's this recognition, and you don't have that [recognition] in America because everybody is from somewhere. But, in Europe, immigration is a bit of a problem because not everyone comes from somewhere. So there's this recognition that you can be an immigrant in France. That you can have another background, and another piece of luggage. It means a lot to me. But it's also a lot of responsibility. Lots of more press, lots of more travel, lots of more this and that. But these are the things you don't choose, but what you do when you are chosen.
